Background	Lange was born on the freighter Byzantine to trader parents. He grew up on ships, learning just about everything there was to know about working on a freighter before he reached adulthood. He was taught by his parents most of the basic maths and sciences. He also learned a good bit of politics and galactic geography due to growing up in space, traveling from world to world. When he came of age, Jim left the life of a freighter crewman behind, or so he thought. He enlisted in a two year tour of duty with Starfleet, but found it not to his liking and didn't renew his enlistment when it ended. He then tried setting up a business on Earth, selling rare items from across the galaxy, but he missed being in space. He closed his store after only a year in business and went to enlist in the Merchant Marine. Due to his previous experience he was able to pass his Crewman and Master's license tests without taking classes or serving on ships first. He decided to work his way up, even though he he could go straight to commanding a ship, so that he could learn how the merchant fleet worked, and not just each ship. His dedication to his work impressed many ship commanders as he worked from the bottom as a 3rd class cargo handler to the top. He spent a year as First Mate on the Private Freight Transport SS Tradewind before applying for command of the Freedom when her captain retired. He was awarded command and based his ship out of Starbase 24 on the frontier. Afeter 2 years in command of the Freedom Lange applied to Starfleet and was granted a commission at the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was given a posting as Second Officer and Chief of Operations aboard the USS Berlin after going through some basic training courses. He was made the ship's XO later that year when the prior XO was assigned command of the USS Green Bay. After another 6 months on the Berlin, Lange was promoted to Commander and assigned as XO on the USS Kalamazoo. He served on the Kalamazoo for 7 months before being recommended for command. 2 months later he was assigned command of the USS Dragonfly. As CO of the Dragonfly, Lange got entangled in a Section 31 coverup when he was asked to rescue Commodore Chris Manley from illegal detention. The Dragonfly also encountered what was initially believed to be a Tal Shiar attempt to abduct a former operative that was aboard the Dragonfly, but turned out to be part of a second attempt by a parasitic hive race to take over Starfleet. These events led to the destruction of the Dragonfly in Cardassian space, after which the Dragonfly's crew were offered a ride home by a Cardassian warship. Trouble broke out aboard ship when one of the Dragonfly's officers, a Bajoran, was nearly raped by a Cardassian crewman. The Dragonfly crew ended up taking control of the ship from the Cardassian crew and flying it to Starbase 60. Once at 60, Lange underwent an inquiry into the events surrounding the loss of the Dragonfly. Eventually Lange was aquitted of any wrongdoing and was given command of the USS Relentless, another Defiant class ship. The ship's first assaignment was aborted when a Tamarian colony requested their aid in dealing with a pirate problem. In spite of initial communicatiosn difficulties, the Relentless was able to assist the Tamarians, though the ship took a fair bit of damage. After a few months in command of the Relentless, Lange took a personal Leave of Absence to help out his family after his father's death in an attack by a different pirate group on the freighter he commanded. He has since returned to duty and after a few months behind a desk has been granted command of the USS Sentinel.
